Strawberry Lemonade

We are in peak strawberry season here in Louisiana which means the local strawberries are fresh, sweet, and can be found anywhere at a great price!

Strawberries are one of my all time favorite fruits. I love them as a base in my smoothies or in yogurt bowls | parfaits. I love them as a healthy dessert and even as a refreshing beverage; both of which I’ll be sharing with my Whole Foods cooking demo this weekend!

To get us ready for the weekend, I’m highlighting my healthy, no sugar added, delicious, strawberry lemonade!

I first shared this recipe on my original site as I was reminiscing about beloved memories of special times spent with my mom.

There I also shared the difference {nutritionally} between my lemonade versus a traditional version made with sugar. I updated this recipe to include fresh strawberries since now it’s the season and I kept the ingredients pretty similar.

If you wanted to use honey or regular sugar {which would increase the calories and sugar content}, try to only add half the amount of a ‘regular’ recipe. For example, if using my recipe, I’d actually only add about 1/2 cup of honey, agave, or raw sugar to make the simple syrup here. You’ll get the sweetness without as much added sugar and the natural sugars in the strawberries will help to keep the bitterness down.

No matter which method you choose for sweetness, my recipe is great {and nutritious} for adults and kids!

It’s so simple to make! First, make a simple syrup. Blend some strawberries. Squeeze some fresh lemons and combine everything! And, drink up!

Strawberry Lemonade

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups water

1 1/2 cups Swerve

zest of 1 lemon

2 cups fresh strawberries

2 cups fresh lemon juice

Directions:

Make the simple syrup by heating the water, Swerve, and lemon zest in a small sauce pot. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring until the “sugar” dissolves. Allow it to cool to room temperature.

In a blender or food processor, blend the strawberries until pureed. Combined the strawberries with the simple syrup and stir in the lemon juice. Chill until needed and serve over ice.
